Passport to Travel

Jeremy Gates has a closer look at the travel situation for UK travellers after the lifting of the travel warnings through their Foreign Office:

Look for tempting long-haul bargains in the next few weeks to Bali and Lombok, as operators aim to rekindle interest rapidly in the area following the Foreign Office decision to give a clean bill of health to the safety of holidays in Indonesia.

Though a handful of operators continued to go there, Bali became a no-go area for most Britons after the terrorist bomb attack of October 2002. But a sustained campaign by operators triggered the Foreign Office rethink at a perfect time for travellers – because July-October is generally reckoned the best time of year to visit.

Says Donna Owen, marketing manager at Tropical Places , which focuses on the resorts of Nusa Dua, Kuta and Sanur: “Bali was our number one destination in Asia until two years ago. Give it six months, and I am confident it will be back at that level, because Bali is a pretty unique mix of beaches, temples and culture.”
